The name Rubicon comes from the Rubicon River, a river running near Rome. It is said that Julius Caesar led his troops to Rome after making the crucial decision to cross the Rubicon, marking an irrevocable point in history. The significance is that this was the first Bordeaux blend wine made in South Africa. Happily South African Bordeaux blends have been incredibly well received. 2012 was a perfect vintage for Meerlust. A good winter rain, an early start to spring and a dry warm summer resulted in perfectly ripe and healthy fruit. Another superb expression of this iconic Cape wine.
Very deep and youthful in colour, with an intense almost purple hue. Classic Rubicon on the nose with violets, ripe plum, cedar wood and intense spice notes. A hint of liquorice and stony minerality is also evident on the nose.
