The name Millecento pays tribute to the year 1100 when the castle at Castiglion del Bosco was first built. The castle walls, gate and parts of the castle itself still remain today, over 900 years later! Only a very limited quantity of Castiglion del Bosco's prime wine are made each year. Grapes are sourced from a single 8.5 hectare plot which is organically farmed.
Wine maker Cecilia Leoneschi explained to us why this vineyard is particularly special. It is relatively high (450 metres) which keeps the fruit fresh but importantly also faces south-east to south-west, which maximises the vines exposure to the sun, ensuring a fully ripe but fresh wine. Millecento is a very complex wine, when you try it the endless layers of flavours follow each other seamlessly, enchanting your palate. They start with red cherry and dark fruits, followed by tobacco smoke, cedar wood and a bit of tar to mention only a few. An elegant persistent wine that will age for many years.
We recommend drinking at 16-30 years old. Brunello is a great wine that deserves something substantial, a roast leg of lamb or tender beef would be a perfect compliment.
