Only 1,589 of this rare wine were produced. Which The Wine Spectator described it as "Elegant aromas of dried citrus, honeysuckle and baked pear feature plenty of power. Offers saline notes on the fresh finish, with a crisp minerality. Complex and alluring." Malmsey's are the sweetest of Madeira wines but their characteristically high levels of acidity balance this perfectly creating a delicious smooth wine. No cellar would be complete without Madeira. Madeira is a fortified style of wine from the Portuguese island of Madeira in the Atlantic. Historically it was an important supply station for sailors and, through this, madeira was transported across the globe gaining a wide market from the UK to Japan.
The wines would age in the hulls of ships where the high temperatures would accelerate the ageing process and caramelise the sugars. To recreate these conditions the wines are today aged in the lofts of the merchants' lodges. Did you know? Madeira was held in such high esteem that it was used to toast the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776.
